What vehicle documents can you notarize?

Does a Missouri car title need to be notarized?

Often, yes. Missouri requires the seller's signature on a vehicle title to be notarized for most private-party transfers, and certain lien releases and ownership documents also call for a notary. That is why a quick, reliable signing matters when a sale is ready to close.

A notary's job is to confirm who signed and that they signed willingly. We verify identity, witness the signature, and apply the seal. We do not complete the title for you, decide which fields to fill in, or give titling and DMV advice.

Do both buyer and seller need to be present?

It depends on which signatures the document requires to be notarized. On many Missouri titles, only the seller's signature must be notarized, so only the seller needs to appear in front of the notary. The buyer can sign their portion separately if it does not require notarization.

If both the buyer and the seller have signatures that need notarizing, then both must be present together with valid photo ID. The same is true when a lienholder representative must sign a release.

What should I have ready?

A little preparation turns a title signing into a five-minute stop. Have these ready before we arrive:

• A valid, unexpired government photo ID for each person whose signature is being notarized
• The title or document, unsigned in the spots that need notarizing, since the notary must watch you sign
• The other signer, if more than one signature must be notarized

Do not sign the title ahead of time, and double-check that the name on your ID reasonably matches the name on the document. If you changed your name recently, mention it when you book so we can advise on the right approach.
